Version 1.15 JULY 1993
This release of MSYS is designed to be an update for Version 1.14. The
.EXE files are designed to replace the existing 1.14 files. If this is
your first experience to MSYS, you will also need to get the MSYS 1.14
disk set for the full documentation plus all of the other support files
necessary to make a full-running MSYS system.
MSYS is available from the Cleveland Hamnet phone BBS. Numbers are
216-942-6382 and 216-942-7516. Both are 300 to 9600 baud. This is a
free BBS (you pay for the call). MSYS may also appear on other phone
BBS systems, but this is the only one I put it on directly.
You may also obtain MSYS from me directly on disk (this may be the
fastest when a new version comes out). For US addresses the cost is $5
per disk which includes the disk, mailer and postage. The complete
MSYS 1.14 disk set contains 3 - 5.25 inch disks. You may order several
versions at a time, I will hold your request until the versions are
released. This way you get to be the first kid on the block with the
new toy! When ordering from me, please specify which version you
already have or which one you want. I keep records with the following
information for people who order MSYS, so you may want to give me this
info. Also please indicate if you want me to call you (collect) if it
would be helpful to answer questions you send me about MSYS.
CALL: Your callsign. This is the key I use to record all your
information.

MSYS 1.15
FIXES
1. Compressed forwarding from FBB stations may now be received in
groups of five as opposed to a single message at a time. Version
1.14 would appear to time out when it saw a Control D in the
middle of a packet. Version 1.15 resolves that problem.
2. The LU RESET command has been fixed. It now permits The list of
list of new users to be properly cleared.
3. The Help listing for MAKEPrivate has been changed to properly
reflect the additional two letters required.
4. MAXBullage has been fixed to properly delete or hold bulletins as
appropriate.
5. The command NOBE is now back in the "bbs only" version (MSYSBBSB).
6. Regenerated messages are now also stored in the mail.bak
directory.
7. Polling with compression should now work - but ONLY with MSYS
version 1.15 or later. Do NOT attempt a compressed poll to a
Version 1.14 MSYS system. It will tend to crash the 1.14 system.
8. Numerous TCP/IP changes have been made to make MSYS more
compatible with NOS. FTP, TELNET, PING have had changes made to
improve their performance.
9. MSYS has improved DISC/UA and */DM protocol handling
10. MUTIL 15 has been fixed. It now properly creates the msglist.dat
file in the default directory.
11. Problems with the PF command have been fixed. PLEASE NOTE:
You MUST run MUTIL 14 in the new MUTIL.EXE prior to starting
MSYS 1.15 for the first time.

NEW ITEMS
1. Messages entered by users on the system that will be held will
result in a note to the user that the message is being held and
will be invisible until review by the sysop. This should help the
duplicate message problem when they are entered by unsuspecting
users that do not understand the hold and review process.
2. The conference may now also be exited with the /ex command.
3. The conference is no longer available to users on the modem port.
4. A new SYSOP command of SE- (SE minus) has been added to send
messages to a port without the "Message from SYSOP at WA8BXN"
phrase. This may be useful when trouble-shooting network
problems.
5. A new command SHUtdown has been added. When on, it prevents any
new incoming connects. This will assist the sysop in a non-
violent shutdown of service for "normal" maintenance without
upsetting users or connects in progress. An AB command will still
be necessary to abort any forwarding in progress.
PLEASE NOTE:
Add the following two lines to the end of your \MSYS\HELP\MSYSMSGS.DAT
file:
!#188
Usage: SHUtdown [ON/OFF] If on prevents incoming connects.
6. A new command VAlidmsgtypes has been added. This command takes a
string of letters as its argument that may follow "S" in send
commands in the bbs. Defaults are BTPW. This should stop the SR,
SE and related problems with the message "type".
7. The K< (Kill from) and K> (Kill to) commands have now been
implemented. Example: K< WA8BXN
8. The "To Call", "From Call" and "@BBS" are now also compared to the
bad word file if it is used.
9. MSYS now supports the fifo buffer in the NS16550AN UART.

MODEM CHANGES:
1. In the forward line to establish an outgoing modem connection,
there are 3 fields after the callsign: dialstring callsign password
These three fields may now contain imbedded control characters such as
^M and ^J (up arrow or shift 6 followed by M and up arrow or shift 6
followed by J for return and line feed respectively). If such
character strings are found in the fields, they will be replaced by the
single control character they represent before they are sent to the
modem.
2. If the callsign is preceded with a period ( as in .NO8M), when
logging into the modem port, the period is stripped out and echoing is
turned off. This change is added to be more compatible with the FBB
code. If the callsign value entered does not begin with a period, then
processing goes on as before.
3. As stated earlier in CHANGES, the conference is no longer
accessible from the modem.
TCP/IP CHANGES
For connection to the bbs via telnet, a file called MSYSPASS.IP must be
present in the default directory. Each line in the file consists of
three words. The first is the login word. The second is the password.
The third is the callsign that the logged in station will appear to be
using to the bbs. This is very similar to the usage in the modem
password file. A different password file is used instead of using the
modem password file since replies given will be visible to monitoring
stations on the air. The modem passwords, if different, will remain
secure.
A sample entry in the file might be:
joeham cqdx W1AW
In the above example, if the response to the login AND password were
joeham cqdx, the callsign W1AW would be used by the bbs for this
connection.
The square bracketed entry [W1AW] in the MSYSHOST.NET file is no longer
necessary.
TCP/IP performance has been addressed in this version and should be
much more compatible with NET, and NOS and other systems.
Further work is in progress to improve the log-in procedure from a MSYS
client into a NOS server. Until that is completed, when logging into a
NOS system from an FTP, you must enter user <call> and then you will be
prompted for the pass command.

CHANGES/ADDITIONS to DOCUMENTATION
MSYS.REP
The field size is limited to 6 characters, the length of a callsign.
Note in particular that you can NOT put an h-address in the rep file.
MAIL.BIN
The files in mail.bin should be killed when the corresponding file is
killed from the mail directory. Certain abrupt terminations of MSYS
may cause records to not be properly deleted. When MSYS is NOT
running, it is safe to delete all files in mail.bin. Those that are
needed again will be recreated. While a daily killing off may not be
necessary, doing it every few weeks may be a good idea.
L=
A l= command will return all of the messages with an @BBS with the
"====" The manual only mentioned the l? command as returning the
"unknown routing" .
MODEM SETUP
One of the users has suggested the following as a good modem set up
file:
ATZ
AT&F
AT&B1
ATL0
ATQ1
ATM1
ATS7=40
ATS19=2
AT&H1
ATS0=1
With that setup, he is able to send data at a maximum speed of 9600
bps.

MSYS to TheNet Matrix
The following should help in connecting MSYS to a matrix of TheNet
nodes. An MSYS/Matrix adapter may easily be made from one of the
"gender changers" commonly available by modifying the existing wires in
the gender changer.

Please be aware that with this configuration, should MSYS be stopped,
traffic through the matrix will also stop. A trade-off in reliability
vs. "crashes" on the matrix may be obtained by removing the link to pin
20 of the MATRIX.
Also, remember that if you are connecting MSYS to a single TheNet tnc,
you MUST connect pins 10 and 23 of the tnc together for proper NRS
protocol selection in the TNC.
One final note on MSYS/TheNet connections - do not forget the ">" in
front of the port name in the port statement in the MSYS.OPT file.
